If a leader has a self-serving perspective, people will never move toward him or her.

Lead Like Jesus

Here’s some statements from Ken Blanchard and Phil Hodges’ book Lead Like Jesus: Lessons from the Greatest Leadership Role Model of All Time:

  • Leadership is a process of influence. Anytime you seek to influence the thinking, behavior, or development of people in their personal or professional ives, you are taking on the role of a leader.
  • Every leader makes a personal choice to influence people in a negative or positive way and to what end they want to influence people.
  • Most of the leadership in each of our lives consists of longer lasting relationships such as parents, spouses, siblings, friends, and citizens rather than leaders with titles on an organizational chart.
  • Leading like Jesus is more than an announcement; it is a commitment to lead in a different way.
  • Leading like Jesus starts with personal leadership, then moves to one-on-one relationships, then to leading a team or group and finally, to leading an organization or community.
  • Interestingly, Jesus invested in the disciples and they were the ones that led out in the organizational aspect of the church.
  • If you live a life that is not designed to please God or give him control, your perspective will be inward and focused on self. If you live your life to please God and put him in charge, your perspective will be outward and characterized by God-given confidence that will lead your life.
  • If a leader has a self-serving perspective, people will never move toward him or her.
  • Effective leaders working at the team level realize that to be good stewards of the energy and efforts of those committed to work with them, they must honor the power of diversity and acknowledge the power of teamwork.
  • Without the trust developed in the one-on-one relationship, empowerment will never happen.
